Johann Conrad Develey founds his mustard manufacturing company in Kaufinger Straße in the heart of Munich. He makes medium-hot to hot mustard varieties there in a French style.
Driven by a spirit of innovation, Johann Conrad Develey mixes carmelised sugar and a special spice mixture into his spicy mustard – sweet mustard is born. We still produce sweet mustard according to the secret original recipe.
Even courts like our mustard. Customers from the Bavarian royal family include King Otto of Bavaria and Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria.
We expand our product range of pickled foods with the acquisition of the traditional Lower Bavarian brand from Pfarrkirchen. They are the ideal complement for a cold cut dinner and therefore for us.
The starting signal is given for a successful partnership that is still ongoing today. We supply McDonald’s with sauces, ketchup and mustard in over 40 countries.
In 1992, we grow with the East German Bautz´ner Senf & Feinkost GmbH. This expands our product range to include the number one in Eastern Germany and now the most-sold mustard in Germany - medium-spicy Bautz’ner mustard.
We set foot in France with the acquisition of the premium mustard brand “Reine de Dijon”. In 1998, we finally put our Polish plant in Warsaw into operation.
Since 2001, Düsseldorf-based Löwensenf and since 2002 the traditional Austrian brand Mautner Markhof have been part of the Develey family.
Five years later, we secure the exclusive distribution partnership for Kikkoman and Tabasco in Germany.
The production and administration at our location in Unterhaching are climate-neutral! Lighthouse projects such as the sustainable cooling and heating generation and the connection to the deep geothermal energy made significant contributions to this.
We receive the Axia Award from the auditing company Deloitte for our commitment to sustainability.
We open our first location in America with our new plant in Dyersburg, Tennessee. The goal: to build the most sustainable production facility in the US.
A year full of awards: We are given the “Axia Best Managed Companies Award” as an excellently managed medium-sized company, Michael Durach receives the “Entrepreneur Of The Year 2019” award from the consulting firm Ernst & Young, and as the crowning finish to the year we are awarded the “German Sustainability Award” for our efforts in terms of sustainability.
We are proud of our 18 locations in 10 countries and of the fact that we are one of the leading and most sustainable manufacturers of mustard and condiments. Our products are exported to over 65 countries. Over 2,000 “Develeyans” now work in our family-owned and operated company.
